While Jeremy worked today, we went lighthouse hunting.
The first lighthouse was the Stony Point lighthouse, located in Henderson. N.Y. This lighthouse was built in 1837. The lighthouse is currently on private property so could only be viewed from the road.
The second lighthouse we saw was the Cape Vincent Breakwater lighthouse. built in 1900 on the Breakwater of Cape Vincent, it was moved in 1951 to its' present site. It welcomes visitors at the city limits.
The third lighthouse viewed was Tibbets Point. Built in 1854, it marks the place where Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River meet. Currently, the keepers house is being used as a Youth Hostel The Fresnel lens, though no longer used as a navigational aid, is still in place.
The whistle in the whistle house still works but is not used because Cape Vincent and Wolfe Island residents complained of the noise.
Behind the lighthouse there is a pay-for-view telescope from which several island lighthouses can be viewed, both American and Canadian. One of those lights is called East Charity Shoal, which can be seen with the naked eye.
