Despite the rain, we were able to see two lighthouses in Connecticut and two in Rhode Island. The first two lighthouses we saw were the last two visible from land in Connecticut, the Morgan Point Lighthouse and the Stonington Lighthouse. The Morgan Point Lighthouse is now private property and the owners have done a great job of making the additional living space they have built blend in with the architecture of the lighthouse. The Stonington Lighthouse is now a museum and is set in a quaint setting, atypical of the New England shore.
After the Connecticut lighthouses, we entered Rhode Island and saw the Watch Hill and Point Judith Lighthouses. No easy task, as at this point, it was pouring down rain and the wind was unbelievable - reminded us of home! However, persistence paid off and we came away with pictures in spite of the weather! It never got out of the 50's today, so add that to the wind and rain, and it was a miserable weather day........are we crazy?
We did stop for lunch in Watch Hill, and that was nice, but very expensive. Gas, food and lodging (which includes RV Parks) is very expensive in New England. I had a bowl of Clam Chowder and Jim had a cheeseburger and we each had a root beer soda, and the cost was $18.75!
Our plans have changed a bit from our initial travel plans. Tomorrow we will head to Maine instead of Massachusetts as there are very few RV Parks in this area of New England. The RV Parks available are full for the Memorial Day holiday weekend. We were unable to find any available sites in Rhode Island or Massachusetts. We were able to make a reservation through the weekend in Maine, so we will go there and then head back to this area after the holiday.. The rule of RVing/camping is "always expect the unexpected"......
Here are the pictures from today's lighthouse visits:
Morgan Point Lighthouse, CT
Built in 1831, ended active service in 1919.
The lighthouse went through several owners until 1991
when Jason Pilalas, a Connecticut native, purchased it for $1.29 million dollars!
Stonington Lighthouse, CT
Built in 1823, sold at auction in 1929 when it became a museum run by the
Stonington Historical Society
Watch Hill Lighthouse, RI
Built in 1808 it is owned by the Coast Guard and maintained by the
Watch Hill Lighthouse Keepers Association
Point Judith Lighthouse, RI
Built in 1810, it is an active Coast Guard Station.
The light is still an active navigational aid, owned and operated by the Coast Guard.
