Day 12 - Point Mugu Naval Station, CA - Prunedale, CA

Upon further research, we discovered that the three lighthouses we wanted to see today were not ones that were easy to get too or were nothing spectacular.  The lighthouse at Vanderburg AFB  (Point Arguello) is a light on a metal pole - nothing pretty about that - and the one at Point Conception was located on a private ranch on the coast, and is not accessible to the general public by land or sea!  The San Luis Obispo lighthouse involved a 3.5 mile hike (one way) from the road, and we knew Jim couldn't walk the distance, and he wouldn't let me walk it by myself, so...........

As a result of not being able to see the above mentioned lighthouses, we decided to move north, and are now located at a KOA Campground in Prunedale, CA ( I didn't name this town, and I'm not sure who did, and/or why - I may not want to know!  Maybe they grow prunes here? )  We are just under 100 miles from San Francisco.  Our plans are to drive to Big Sur and Monterry tomorrow to see two lighthouses - Point Sur and Point Pinos.  Again for more information on these lighthouses, go to our Lighthouse Friends link on the blog.....some of the history of lighthouses is very interesting!

On our drive today we passed through many vineyards and many fields of strawberries and veggies!  Miles and miles of all of the aforementioned fields of goodies!  Broccoli, romaine lettuce, artichokes and peas!  Come to find out that due to the climate in the area and the fact that the fields are located between two mountain ranges, they are able to produce the veggies and fruit for a period of six months out of the year!

We also drove through several seaside towns, and it is amazing to see some of the homes that are precariously nestled in the cliffs overlooking the Pacific!  We also saw a blimp today - I did take a picture, but it was on the fly, and I didn't have time to zoom in on it!

One of the highlights of the day was stopping in Buellton, California at Andersen's Pea Soup Restaurant!  My sister use to live in California and has always talked about the wonderful split-pea soup served there!  We didn't eat at the restaurant, but we did buy some soup to bring home!  (Jim and Speedy had a photo op to boot!)

The weather is still cool in California - it never got above 60 degrees today, and it is now 55 degrees and dropping as I write this blog.

Hope tomorrow's lighthouse hunt has a better result than today!

Cliff Houses on the coast

Hope they don't have landslides!

These pump jacks made us feel right at home!

Take this exit Jim! Now!  .....You passed it!

Vineyards were everywhere!

I wanted to stop at a tasting room or two, but the driver had other plans :(
