Day 12 - Fort Story at Cape Henry, VA

Today we rose early and headed to Virginia Beach, VA.  Actually we headed to Fort Story RV Park located at Fort Story, which is a military facility (Army) located on Virginia Beach.  We passed through many small quaint towns in our travels through Virginia on our way to Fort Story.  Among them were Brodnax, Edgerton, Emporia, and Capron.  Each of these towns have a lot of history pertaining to the Civil War Era.  It would take a full blog to tell you about the history that took place at these sites, but if you are a history buff, you can Google any of these towns and read about the history that took place there. Other noteworthy facts of this area is the agriculture which includes rice, corn, peanuts, pumpkins and cotton.

We particularly chose to go to Fort Story as there are two lighthouses, fairly close to one another on the Post that are situated right next to the RV park!  Ironically, they are called the Old Cape Henry Lighthouse, and the New Cape Henry Lighthouse.  The Old Cape Henry Lighthouse was commissioned by President George Washington in 1791.  The New Cape Henry Lighthouse was commissioned in the 1870's.

There are many hisitorical sites on Fort Story.  Among them is the site where the Battle of the Capes took place, which began on September 5, 1781. ( www.nps.gov/.../battle_of_the_capes.htm)  This also the site that the first English people landed in the new world and established Jamestown.   For more information on the Cape Henry First Landing, go to www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Henry

One of the BIG disadvantages of staying at this RV park on Post, is the fact that is is located in a very dense wooded area, and we were unable to get wifi, phone, or satellite service!  So we were not able to post on our blog, watch TV or make phone calls unless we went down the road and out of the woods!  This made for an interesting two evening of conversation, as you can imagine!  The weather was beautiful and the temps were again high in the mid seventies, and low in the mid 50's at night.

Our plans for tomorrow are to travel to Edenton, NC to see a lighthouse that has been refurbished since the last time we were in the area, and then to Newport News, VA to view three lighthouses.

Until then, enjoy the pictures of Fort Story/Cape Henry/Virginia Beach, VA.!
