Day 17 - It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood......

Our day began by simply relaxing, having breakfast and enjoying, once again, the beautiful weather here in northern New Jersey.  Having verified that Jim was feeling up to a trip to town, we hopped into the car and went down the road to visit the neighbors who operate a buffalo farm.  We had met the owners at the restaurant last night, and they encouraged us to come and pay them a visit.  The Readington River Buffalo Farm is HUGE!  There are hundreds of buffalo roaming the acerage, and we did see a few of them.  The farm processes and sells buffalo meat locally.  Each May, when the buffalo babies are born, the farm holds an event call the "Buffalo Watch".  There are arts and craft vendors. hay rides for those wanting to see if they can see the baby buffalos, and sales of buffalo meat products.  Part of the proceeds from this event go to the local emergency services facilities.  The owners allot space for a community garden, and we went and picked some fresh tomatos while we were there.  There were also people riding horses and we got to meet one of the horses (Whiskey Lee) who is 19 years old and still enjoys his daily rides........children and adults alike.  It was just a fun place to visit and we enjoyed it very much.

We then drove into Flemington, New Jersey.  This is a lovely quaint town (we have certainly seen a lot of quaint towns of late) with a lot of history.  Primarily, Flemington is known for its' Stangl Pottery Factory. (www.stanglpottery.com) The factory was first founded in 1814 and they produced storage crocks and jars.  It later became the known as the Hill Pottery Factory, and then finally the Stangl Pottery Factory.  My guess is that many of you have heard about Stangl Pottery before, or are familiar with the various patterns of fruit and flower pieces.  Jim and Penny's mom had a lot of it, and we still have pieces that once belonged to her.  The factory closed many years ago, but the area has been revitalized and there are now many small boutiques, restaurants, and offices that occupy the space once used to make pottery.  We ate at one of the restaurants called the Blue Fish Grill and had delicious Fish and Chips!

After lunch, we drove through the historic district of Flemington, and it is comprised of some very interesting architecture and cozy gift shops, book stores, cafes, etc.  There was an Arts and Crafts Fair going on as well and they had a Barber Shop Chorus performing in the Center Square.  Another one of those places where I wouldn't mind living, except they have WINTER here as well! :(

After our tour of Flemington,  we headed to the grocery store then back to Penny's house for a relaxing afternoon.  The dogs are in their element enjoying the cool temps, Jim and Penny are watching football and I am blogging while I can - the wifi is tempermental here, so I have to catch it when I can,

Tomorrow is church and then to Bound Brook for a BBQ at Rob and Rita's.

Til next time.............
