Day 13 - The Search Is On.....

Today we backtracked a little and drove 85 miles to Edenton, NC. to view the Roanoke River Lighthouse.  When we were in this area two years ago, they had just moved the lighthouse to this location to begin restoration.  We made a monetary contribution to the restoration project, and we were anxious to see how they were coming along.  To our surprise, the lighthouse restoration has been completed and the lighthouse moved back into the water!  Edenton, NC is a lovely quaint town with a diverse artistic community and old town charm.  The Battle of Albemarle Sound was fought off shore near Edenton, so there is a lot of history here as well.  There have been so many wonderful towns that we have passsed through or visited that we thought would be a wonderful place to live - with one exception- they have the winter season!  Just can't do the cold and snow anymore.........

For those of you that might be baseball buffs, we passed through the town of Hertford, N.C. on our way to Edenton, N.C..  This is the home town of "Catfish" Hunter, MLB Pitcher and member of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

After visiting the lighthouse in Edenton, we then headed to Newport News, VA and Hampton, VA to find two more lighthouses.  The lighthouse in Newport News, the Wolf Trap Lighthouse, was in the water, but could be seen from the shore - barely.  The lighthouse in Hampton, the Old Point Comfort Lighthouse, was located on Fort Monroe.  I wish we had more time to explore Fort Monroe, it is an amazing fortress, and until 2011 was an active Army post.  Fort Monroe was designated a National Monument on July 29, 2012!  Again, it was another one of those places where I would considering living, if it wasn't in the COLD zone.    Fort Monroe history can be found on line at www.nps.gov/fomr/

After leaving Fort Monroe, we headed back to the RV.  We then decided to treat ourselves to seafood for dinner and found a nice restaurant on Virginia Beach where we sat on the waters edge and watched the sun set over the Bay.
